Leather has been the oldest, the most valuable and also the most preferred material for mankind’s basic needs of clothing, housing, protection and much more. It has had a rich and varied history since ancient times and remains to this day, an ideal preference for shoes, luggage, furniture, upholstery in automobiles, and more. It is a beautiful and natural fabric that lasts for a long period of time and offers a high level of breathability making it a comfortable fit for daily use. If properly cared for, it can easily last for 4 or 5 years. But for that, it is essential for you to understand how you can clean your leather products because improper care can cause significant wear and tear in your leather items.
In this post, we’ll discuss how to take care of your leather work gloves and keep them clean for long-term usage. Whether you’re involved in the construction work, chemical industries, constructing buildings, electrical/power work or practising welding; your leather gloves will definitely get dirty in terms of stains and dirt. Although washing is certainly the only way to increase the life of your work gloves and help in bringing back their shine and brightness, laundry cleaning isn’t the only option.
So take a look at the three simple steps that can help you clean your leather work gloves and make them last a longer period of time.
1- Use a toothbrush for micro-cleaning
The use of strong detergent and a brush can help remove hard stains & grime on the gloves. Simply take a used toothbrush to wash and wipe out the dirt and grime from your leather work gloves. Make sure to cover and coat all sides and corners of the gloves focusing on the fingertips as most of the dirt and filth is accumulated here
2- Deep Cleaning with Detergent and Water
Once you are done with brushing and rubbing the gloves thoroughly with the help of a toothbrush, move on to the next step. Now soak your gloves in the container filled with cold water. After this add one and a half cup of any strong liquid detergent in the bucket and add one tablespoon of salt. This helps deep clean the gloves as the remaining dirt and grime can be removed easily from the outside and inside.
Once you’re done with the above step, clean your bucket and refill it with water and soap and add the gloves back to the solution for 10 to 15 minutes to remove any dirt or stain spots you’ve missed. Scrub again if required.
3- Drain, Rinse and Dry
Once you’re done with the deep cleaning process, take the gloves, rinse the detergent off and then put them in a bucket of cold water so the excess soap can be washed off entirely. Once you’re sure that your gloves are detergent free, take them out, squeeze them gently and then hang to dry from the fingertips. Make sure not to overdry in the sun, otherwise, the leather quality may be affected.
When these work gloves become extremely dirty, they tend to thicken and become uncomfortable to wear. Hence, proper cleaning and washing ensure long-lasting durability, allowing the wearer to work comfortably. Leather gloves can last for several years if cleaned, washed, and maintained regularly.
